Laura Olivas, Founder & Aerial Instructor, On Edge Aerial Dance
Aerialist since 2004
Laura Olivas has always been captivated by dance—the beauty, freedom, and emotional expression it offers. Her journey began in 2004 at Dancer’s Studio in Cd. Juárez, where she trained intensively in hip-hop, jazz, ballet, and aerial arts, specializing in silks and hoop. By 2007, she joined the Tec de Monterrey University dance company, performing at events like the Exa Concert in El Paso and the Collage Concert, a fusion of live music and dance.
After earning her degree in Accounting and Finance, Laura joined Hip Jazz Company, where she performed in musical theater productions and competed at the state and national level across Mexico. Her entrepreneurial drive led her to establish Chassé Dance Studio, where she taught children and choreographed aerial and jazz routines showcased at events such as Expodanza Festival, Arte en el Parque, the Pan-American Women’s Volleyball Games, and the grand opening of La Rodadora museum.
In 2013, Laura relocated to Southern California to expand her career internationally, performing with Circo Etéreo Professional Company at luxury events including the Newport Beach Film Festival and the Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach. Two years later, she co-founded On Edge Aerial Entertainment with Hillary Bassoff.
In 2016, Laura quite literally “ran off with the circus” when she joined the Spain-based company Circo de los Horrores. Touring throughout Mexico, she performed her acclaimed silks duet “Black Widow”, a theatrical act blending acrobatics and character work. Sharing the stage with artists from Mongolia, Ukraine, Portugal, Spain, and Mexico, Laura describes this chapter as one of the most challenging and transformative experiences of her career—living on tour buses, performing nightly in massive circus tents, and bringing dark fantasy to life for thousands of spectators across multiple cities.
By late 2016, Laura returned home to the El Paso–Juárez borderland with renewed purpose: to share her experience and passion through teaching. After several years collaborating with local studios, her dream became reality in 2021 with the grand opening of On Edge Aerial Dance—a creative sanctuary where students of all backgrounds can discover their strength, artistry, and freedom through flight.
Laura’s favorite part of On Edge is witnessing the exact moment a student realizes they’ve achieved something they once thought impossible. Her advice to all
