Adopt a Highway: Teaching Children the Importance of Community Service

Inspired by the rugged beauty of the desert landscape in this beautiful community we are proud to call home, It Takes A Village: El Paso has taken on the responsibility to adopt two miles of Highway U.S. 62, just outside Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. We have decided not only to be committed to the education of our children, but also to instill in them the values of service and stewardship in a very tangible and impactful way.

This tight-knit group of families comes together several times a year for a common purpose: to pick up trash and keep our adopted highway clean. It’s not just about tidying up the roadside though; it’s about teaching our children the importance of giving back to the community we hold dear and caring for the environment that houses and sustains us.
Although highway cleanup hours are officially counted towards the very prestigious Presidential Volunteer Service Award opportunity offered by our group, the pursuit of this award is about more than just recognition. We don't take lightly the importance of instilling into our children a sense of responsibility and empathy that comes by teaching them that service is not just a duty, but a privilege. We believe that true fulfillment comes from helping others, with no expectation of reward.
By engaging in activities like highway cleanups, we not only make our surroundings cleaner and safer, but also foster a sense of belonging and solidarity within our own family, as well as among friends, and neighbors. It’s about building a village that everyone has a part in; consequently making it a better place to live.
Together, we're not just cleaning up our highways; we're nurturing a spirit of generosity and compassion that will benefit our community for years to come.
As we prepare for our next cleanup on August 10th, we extend an invitation to others to join us! Whether homeschoolers or not, everyone is welcome to participate, to connect with new friends, and to start your own journey towards changing the world and earning the Presidential Volunteer Service Award!
The spirit of community, service, and stewardship shines bright In It Takes A Village: El Paso. Together, let's continue to inspire and uplift each other as we work towards a more connected community. Thank you for partnering with us! After all, it truly does take a village!
