Book Club for Grades 3-4: Exploring Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Join us for a captivating book club where students will explore the Newberry Award-winning book Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. All materials for the course, including the book, are provided.

What Students Will Learn:

  • Story Elements: How to identify key elements of the story and understand their contribution to the overall theme.
  • Theme Understanding: The meaning and purpose of themes within a story.
  • Vocabulary Building: New vocabulary words and their meanings.
  • Setting Discovery: How to understand and describe a story’s setting, even with minimal details.
  • Character Exploration: How to describe characters beyond physical traits and understand them based on their life experiences.

What Students Will Do:

  • Weekly Discussions: Read the book at home and come prepared to discuss what they’ve read.
  • Creative Collage: Create a collage using magazine cut-outs to represent a character from the book or someone in their life to represent the idea of "seeing with your heart."
  • "10 Things About Me" List: Work together to create a list that highlights the importance of character depth

We provide the book and all necessary materials. This book club offers a great opportunity for young readers to enhance their literary skills and engage creatively with the story. We look forward to having you join us!

MEET YOUR TEACHER: 

Mariah Morales is a former clinical director with specialized training in managing learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. She holds a degree in Global Culture and Language, with a concentration on how a literature shapes national identity and history, particularly impacting the formation of beliefs and perspectives in children and young adults.
