May 2025 - Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick
Level 200s - Emerging Writers
Tuesdays at 12:30 PM | $65
In Freak the Mighty, Max and Kevin form an unlikely and powerful friendship. Kevin, a small boy with a sharp mind, and Max, a larger boy with a troubled past, work together to face the challenges of their world. This heartwarming story explores themes of bravery, loyalty, and self-discovery.
Throughout the month, we’ll dive into:
• The History of Heroes in Myths and Folktales: We’ll explore legendary heroes and discuss what traits and actions make someone a hero. Students will be encouraged to think critically about what defines a hero, whether in literature, history, or their own lives.
• Exploring Literary Elements: We’ll look at the characters, themes, settings, and conflicts in the story, and use hands-on activities to understand how these elements shape the narrative.
• Similes and Metaphors: Students will learn to recognize and use similes and metaphors to enhance their writing.
• Point of View: Students will practice writing paragraphs from different perspectives to deepen their understanding of how point of view affects storytelling.
• Writing Practice: Students will write short response paragraphs, focusing on vocabulary, spelling, and grammar, and reflect on key events in the book.
Join us as we journey through this inspiring story of friendship, courage, and the true meaning of heroism!
