Join us in May for a journey through Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, a heartwarming story of a young girl’s resilience and courage during the Great Depression. Esperanza, once a privileged girl in Mexico, must adapt to a new life in California after a tragedy strikes her family. Through her story, we will explore important historical events like the Great Depression and the Mexican Revolution using paired nonfiction texts.
What You’ll Learn:
• Historical Context: Learn about the Great Depression and the Mexican Revolution through nonfiction readings and discussions.
• Literary Elements: Analyze key elements of storytelling, including character development, theme, and plot. Hands-on activities will help bring these elements to life.
• Cultural Proverbs: Discover the meaning and purpose of cultural proverbs and how they reflect values and beliefs.
• Vocabulary: Expand your word bank by learning and discussing new vocabulary from the text.
• Celebration: At the end of the month, we will celebrate our learning with a Jamaica party, featuring fun activities and treats inspired by the story.
