April 2025 - Trouble Don’t Last by Shelley Pearsall

Level 200s – Emerging Writers

Tuesdays, 12:30 PM | $65

In April, we will read Trouble Don’t Last by Shelley Pearsall, a heartfelt and powerful novel about a young boy named Samuel, who escapes from slavery with his friend, a fellow runaway named Hiram. The story takes place in the 1850s, as Samuel embarks on a journey to freedom, learning about courage, friendship, and survival along the way. With the help of a group of abolitionists, Samuel must navigate the dangers of the Underground Railroad and escape the ruthless men who want to bring him back to slavery.

The book explores important themes like freedom, the power of hope, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression. It also shows the deep bonds of friendship and trust that develop during difficult times. Samuel’s journey highlights the importance of making brave decisions, even when the outcome is uncertain.

What We’ll Explore:

The Underground Railroad & Slavery: Students will learn about the history of the Underground Railroad, the experiences of enslaved people, and the importance of abolitionists like Harriet Tubman in the fight for freedom.

Harriet Tubman: We’ll focus on the incredible story of Harriet Tubman, whose courage and leadership helped free hundreds of enslaved people, including Samuel’s character in the book.

Similes and Metaphors: Students will study how the author uses similes and metaphors to express emotions and describe the characters’ experiences.
