Materials and classes are paid for ahead of time. For this reason, no refunds or credits are permitted once payment has been made. 


INCLUDES: 

  • A copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (books may be in good used condition. Some editions may have library markings on them.)
  • A composition notebook for in-class assignments and taking notes as they read the story at home
  • Six August Classes, beginning Tuesday August 13th
  • Movie night with their class at the conclusion of the course (Date TBA in September)

Through lively discussions and creative projects, students will expand their vocabulary, learn to spot reliable information, and become savvy media consumers. This writing-intensive course focuses on the intersection of reality and fantasy, using the whimsical world of Willy Wonka as a foundation.

Course Objectives:

  • Source Evaluation: Begin learning to identify reliable sources, detect bias, and discern fact from opinion.
  • Narrative Storytelling: Develop persuasive and authoritative writing skills by creating a believable narrative about a fictional event.

Key Activities:

    1. Reading and Discussion:

      • Read and discuss "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," focusing on evaluating the elements of a text, such as its themes, characters, and structure, to gain a deeper understanding of how those elements contribute to the overall message
    1. Critical Thinking and Source Evaluation:

      • Identify reliable sources and detect bias in media.
      • Differentiate between fact and opinion.
      • Examine the traits that determine a narrator's reliability or unreliability.
  1. Narrative Writing Project:

    • Write a news article on a fictional event, using persuasive and authoritative techniques to convince the reader of its authenticity. 

Outcome: Students will gain a deeper understanding of blending fantasy with reality, develop critical media literacy, and enhance their persuasive narrative writing skills. This course empowers students to critically evaluate media and information in their daily lives.

MEET YOUR TEACHER: 

Mariah Morales is a former clinical director with specialized training in managing learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. She holds a degree in Global Culture and Language, with a concentration on how a literature shapes national identity and history, particularly impacting the formation of beliefs and perspectives in children and young adults.
