Join us as we dive deep into the world of dystopian fiction! This class is perfect for teens who love to read, write, and discuss powerful stories. We’ll focus on character development, creative projects, and exploring how dystopian settings challenge us to think critically.
What to Expect:
• Character Mapping: Learn how to develop complex characters and track their journeys. Discover the unique aspect of dystopian genre that uses young children and teens as their main characters.
• Propaganda Projects: Write your own propaganda, while exploring its role in both fiction and history.
• Writing Prompts: Step into the shoes of your characters and write from the perspective of a dystopian society, as both its leaders and oppressed subjects.
• The Importance of Resistance: Explore how dystopian literature reflects the timeless struggle against oppressive authority, drawing parallels to the bravery of the Founding Fathers during the American Revolution of 1776, when resistance sparked the fight for freedom.
• Movie Night: After we finish the book, join us for a movie night!
• Compare & Contrast: We’ll wrap up with a final discussion to compare the book to its film adaptation.
Students can bring a computer to class for writing assignments if they can stay on task and use it appropriately. Inappropriate or off-topic use of a computer we will politely ask for it to be handed off to a parent.
